College Certificate in Further Education, Short Course (CCFES)

What is special about this course?

Are you confused about the future? Are you ready to make changes but you don’t know where to start? If you are not currently in education, employment or training or if you’ve just left school, this full-time course will bring you into the college environment and give you skills, qualifications and confidence which will help you design your future.

It has been designed to give you the opportunity to try the wide range of practical subjects that the college offers.  You will gently but steadily build study and essential skills as you progress in qualifications between levels 4 and 5.  Your Personal Development will increase your self-confidence and help you to take more control of your future

This full-time course runs for the second half of the academic year; January to June.  It allows suitable students to progress in qualifications from between levels 4 – 5.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a basic education and be keen to learn new skills to help them progress on to further education or employment.

All applicants will be invited for interview.

You will study units from across the curriculum, including:

  • Child, Health and Social Care
  • Computing with Digital Media
  • Business Administration
  • Outdoor Adventure and
  • Core Skills: Communication, Numeracy and ICT.

How will I study my course?

In 2021 this course can be studied from any remote location where access to a PC and Internet are available.

This course will be taught for 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.00am – 4.30pm.

Each week will comprise of scheduled, connected learning time and flexible learning time. You need to commit to both, but you can choose when to complete flexible learning to fit around work, caring and personal commitments.  Some flexible learning must be done on a weekly basis.

Connected learning is when you learn together with lecturers,instructors,students and others. Connected learning happens at a scheduled time in a practical workshop, an online-classroom, a studio, a specialist classroom, the workplace or in the outdoors.

Flexible learning covers lecturer directed learning and self-directed learning.

Lecturer-directed learning is weekly learning activity, for example:
• posting your idea in a discussion forum,
• completing a quiz,
• practising a task, activity or idea
• watching a video or reading,
• discussing and working on a solution with another student,
• researching and gathering information,
• completing an assignment or project-based task.

Self-directed learning is your decision about further study and focus.  We encourage you to take ownership of your learning and areas of interest. You can ask us to help you to determine areas for further development.

As and when it is appropriate and safe to do so, your connected learning will take place in the workshop.  However, during periods of social distancing restrictions, some of your learning may need to move to an online-classroom.  This will include a combination of video conferencing, interactive chat and sharing of presentation slides and other visuals. Online-classrooms provide you with real time interaction, contact and discussion with your lecturer and fellow students.

Fees

Most students have their course fees paid as this is a full time course. Please read our Fees & Funding information pages for more information regarding residency, previous study and bursary rates. Please contact funding.whc@uhi.ac.uk if you have any further questions.

Some of our courses require students to have essential equipment/clothing.

If you are under 18, you are entitled to have essential equipment paid for whether you are entitled to Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) or not. However you must complete an application even if you know that you’re not entitled to EMA.

If you are 18 and over and are eligible for a bursary, these costs will be met through your bursary. If you are not eligible for a bursary, you will need to fund these items yourself.

What can I do on completion of my course?

On completing the course, you will receive awards from a range of college courses at SCQF levels 4 - 5.

College Certificate in Further Education, short course begins in January and finishes in June so if you find that you are interested in one of our further education courses, you can apply to start in the following September.

And if you decide to go into employment, you will take your experience and skills with you. 60% of last year’s students took up full-time college courses while others went back to the workplace.
