Textiles HND

What is special about this course?

The HND Textiles is a highly creative, design-led course for those with a passion for designing and creating, providing you with the opportunity to explore your creative potential.

Through the process of experimentation with materials and media, you will establish your own design practice, with opportunities to design textiles for fashion, interiors and accessories. You will develop knowledge and key skills, such as interpreting briefs, planning, analysis and presentation of design ideas.

Course work is mainly project-based and you are encouraged to experiment with a wide variety of materials and techniques. The programme provides a thorough grounding in textile processes, allowing you to develop a range of vocational skills relevant to a career in textiles. The lecturing team is composed of a dedicated group of professionals with a breadth of experience within the creative industries.    

Studying in our specially equipped fashion and textile department at UHI West Highland, you will work on projects from the initial planning and research stages, through design and development, to the production of final outcome.

Entry requirements

For entry to year 1 (HNC):

• 1 Scottish Higher at grade C or above in Art and Design or a related subject OR
• 1 A level at grade D or above in Art and Design or a related subject
• You must also submit an art portfolio that demonstrates your art and design skills and understanding of the creative process
• Applications will be considered from those who do not meet the academic requirements if they can demonstrate some experience in the textile/fashion industry or in art and design, or hold a National Qualification or Foundation Apprenticeship in a related subject

Advanced entry to year 2 (HND):

• Successful completion of HNC Textiles (120 SCQF credits) 

Year 1 - HNC

Year 1 of this course is the HNC Textiles.

Year 2 - HND

Core modules may include:

• Art and design: project
• Graded unit 2
• Observational drawing portfolio
• Surface decoration for textiles: advanced 
• Textile techniques: advanced

Optional modules may include:

• Concept garment design: an introduction
• Designing and producing a fashion garment: advanced
• Fabric construction: an introduction 
• Fine art textiles: an introduction
• Textile accessory: advanced 
• Textiles for interior: advanced techniques

Fees

For students normally domiciled in Scotland, with a term-time address in Scotland, the following fees apply:

This includes

• EU nationals with settled or pre-settled status in the UK,
• EEA/Swiss nationals with settled status in the UK
• EEA/Swiss nationals with pre-settled status who are self-employed or migrant workers in the UK.

Rest of UK students

For students normally domiciled in the rest of the UK (England, Wales and N. Ireland, including Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) and with a term time address in Scotland, the following fees apply:

Fees are payable in advance each academic year unless otherwise agreed.

There are a number of funding options available to UK students to help you pay for your studies and your cost of living while studying.

International students

For students who do not normally reside in the UK, including EU/EEA and Swiss nationals without settled or pre-settled status in the UK, with a term-time address in Scotland, the following fees apply:

This includes EEA/Swiss nationals with pre-settled status who are not self-employed or migrant workers in the UK.

Part-time study is not open to international student requiring Student Route visa sponsorship to study in the UK.

Additional costs

You will be provided with a material and equipment list (up to approx £200) from which you will be able to order what you need for your studies. You should also allow for additional material costs for projects, these will vary depending on your choice of fabrics and embellishments.
