Art and Design with Textiles SCQF Level 6

What is special about this course?

Set in the stunning surroundings of the Highlands, you will draw inspiration and gain practical experience in the fields of art & design. Taught by experienced tutors and professional artists in a studio setting, this course is for anyone wishing to explore their own creative practice in art and design.

Through practical experimentation, you will have the opportunity to explore a variety of art and design disciplines including expressive drawing, mixed media, printmaking, surface decoration, printed textile techniques and sketchbook practice.

Gaining technical experience and developing your own personal style, you will develop a portfolio of artwork that showcases your talents and may be used to apply for further study/ to create your own business venture/ or for personal satisfaction and achievement. The course culminates in an end of year exhibition given students a platform to share their work with the public.

Entry requirements

This course is open to anyone wishing to gain a formal introduction to drawing skills.  The course is suitable for beginners, or those with limited experience of art and design study, looking to enter further education at an introductory level, or looking to study for leisure.  It is also suitable for those returning to college after an absence from study or those wishing to develop a portfolio for application to higher FE level / HE level study.

On completion you will achieve a National Qualifications Certificate in Art & Design at SCQF Level 6, comprising the following units:
  • Expressive drawing
  • Exploratory media handling
  • Sketchbook development
  • Contextual studies
  • Surface decoration - including printmaking
  • Textile exploration - introductory

Course cost: £270 plus £25 studio fee prior to course starting, this covers basic materials which can be supplemented as desired.

What can I do on completion of my course?

This course provides good progression routes for further study in art and design sectors, working towards being a professional artist as well as the development of a portfolio for application to higher FE and HE level study including the HNC/D Textiles at West Highland College in Fort William, or the Contemporary Art Practice HNC in Portree.
