What is special about this course?

This is a flexible work-based learning course so you can achieve qualifications without leaving the workplace. There is no day release as our assessors visit you. You can progress your career and open up promotion possibilities.

This qualification is suitable for a wide range of large and small retail organisations, for example:

  • department stores,
  • specialist retailers, eg electrical, IT, mobile phones, fashion, beauty products,
  • DIY stores
  • food retailers, eg greengrocers, fishmongers, bakers, butchers
  • cash and carry outlets
  • supermarkets
  • retail outlets in the voluntary sector
  • retail outlets in the tourism sector, eg visitor attractions, museums

Entry requirements

Candidates must be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities, which allow them to gather the required evidence. No prior qualifications or knowledge are required to undertake this qualification.  However, achievement of SVQ Retail Skills at SCQF 4, or experience/knowledge of the retail industry would be an advantage.

This qualification covers areas such as health and safety, teamwork, customer service and sales. There are wide range of optional units reflecting the diversity of the sector and the multi-channel nature of the modern retail business. 

You will study 3 mandatory units and 7 optional units.  Your Assessor will help you select the range of units that suit your role/career goals best.

The mandatory units are:

  • Give Customers a Positive Impression of Yourself and Your Organisation
  • Maintain Health and Safety Procedures in a Retail Organisation
  • Work Effectively as Part of a Team in a Retail Organisation

The 7 optional units will be selected in relation to your role. These could include topics such as demonstrating products, stock management, dealing with challenging customers, display management, and managing customer information.

How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed in the workplace and via e-portfolio. Some assessment will be submissions of evidence produced in your role. Some will be observations in the workplace.
