What is special about this course?

Are you working with older or vulnerable adults? Do you want to achieve a qualification while working?

This flexible work-based qualification which is accredited by SQA, will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills that are required to work successfully with the older adult. Course material will be covered in the workplace through practise, observation and the creation of a portfolio. Additional time will be spent with open learning materials while receiving support from your tutor/assessor.

This award meets registration requirements for Scottish Social Services Council for care workers.

Entry requirements

It is recommended that you have a minimum of 3 Standard Grades or National 4s, one of which should be English. However, mature candidates with considerable experience in the sector will also be considered. You must be in full employment and working with older adults on a regular basis.

This is a work based qualification and is a requirement for registration with the Scottish Social Services Council.     

The qualification has six units to be completed. Four are mandatory and two are optional.

The mandatory units are:

  • Support effective communication. 
  • Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals. 
  • Develop your own knowledge and practice. 
  • Support the safeguarding of individuals. 

The optional units will be chosen with you and will cover the area of care in which you work.

To be eligible, you must be working in the health and social care sector. This is a work based qualification with assessments being carried out in the workplace.
