Highland Students announce annual awards

Organised by the Highlands and Islands Students’ Association, the HISA awards give students a chance to thank the academic staff, support staff and students who have inspired and supported them.

The annual awards are judged by a student panel and winners are selected on the quality of the nomination. This year, we are delighted at the large number of category nominations for our staff and students – and of course that a number of West Highland College UHI staff,  two of our students and a sports club based here have won awards and been highly commended:

Most Inspiring Lecturer                        Marina Finlayson

Best Support Staff                                  Christine Blyth

Best Class Representative                     Solomon Azulay

Most Engaging Online Tutor                   Lewis Sturrock

Best Personal Academic Tutor                Morag McKie

Best Support Staff                                    Robert MacLeod

Most Inspiring Student                            Katie Wrigglesworth

Sue Macfarlane, depute principal at West Highland College UHI congratulated all the recipients:  “We are absolutely delighted that the commitment of our staff to their students and the engagement of our students with their peers has been recognised in this way.  All of our lecturers and support staff do their absolute utmost to ensure that our students have the best possible experience and the best possible outcome to their studies.  Our student representatives are also supported by staff to give the best voice possible to our student body.

But these individuals have clearly gone the extra mile in providing inspiration, encouragement and support when most needed and to be singled out in this way is a great recognition of that effort. To be recognised by students is praise indeed, and we add our many congratulations to all from West Highland College UHI who have received awards and commendations this year.”

HISA President, Alan Simpson, said: “The HISA awards saw another increase in nominations this year with over 500 students taking the time to nominate somebody who has added to their learning experience over the academic year. Once again, the number of nominations and the care taken to write the nominations shows just how much students appreciate all of our lecturers, support staff, tutors and their peers. It was a real privilege to be part of the awards panel and to be able to read every single nomination. University of the Highlands and Islands staff and students are the best!”

Dr Iain Morrison, dean of students, commented: “Once again a record number of our students have made it clear that our university is a great place to study and has staff whom they recognise as being committed to their learning, teaching and wellbeing. Nothing means more to our colleagues than hearing from their students that they are doing a good job and we are immensely proud of every one of this year’s winners.”
