There’s never a dull moment if you’re a student at West Highlands College UHI. It’s a relaxed, vibrant place to live with a warm and welcoming community. There’s a fair chance that you’re already a lover of the great outdoors, and living here will certainly not disappoint. The surrounding area is staggeringly beautiful and its environment is the perfect outdoor adventure playground.
The region has a relatively small and widely dispersed population. The main town of Fort William is very accessible though, just 70 miles from Inverness, with easy links to the central belt.
The town is itself in a dramatic setting, in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. This location throws up a world of opportunities from fantastic skiing to mountain biking, rock climbing and hiking. With easy access to the sea and lochs there are plenty of opportunities for water sports too.
It doesn’t matter what the weather is doing, there is always something different to try.
There are plenty of clubs to join from yoga to shinty. And we are very fortunate to have a skilled and enthusiastic team of students from Adventure Tourism Management who get together annually to put together a programme of enticing and original activities.
If you need a breather then there is plenty of interest culturally too. If history is your thing then you have a world to explore of ancient cairns, castles and stately homes. Wildlife opportunities abound, too, with chances to see the spectacular sightings of deer, birds of prey, seabird colonies and ocean life.
For town life, Fort William has plenty to offer. As well as charming shops, there’s a good selection of cafés and restaurants too.
But it is perhaps the strong spirit of community that holds student life together. With activities lined up throughout the year which range from the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup to the Annual Mountain Film Festival - to trail and river races, music events and the highland games, the region is always brimming with life and energy.
If you’re looking for inspiration and direction, then West Highlands College UHI is the place for you.
